Mountaineering School

Our Mountaineering School is a prime example of the overarching aim of our Adventure Schools - to get young people interacting with the great New Zealand outdoors.

SCOUTS New Zealand's Mount Ruapehu Lodge provides a base camp for Venturers 15+, Rovers and Leaders to learn mountaineering skills.

This year's school will be run in conjunction with New Zealand Alpine Club, using highly skilled instructors, up to date equipment and current best practice.

The students will learn basic mountaineering and above the bush line skills that enable them to explore the mountains.  They will learn a range of techniques needed to move around in the mountains during winter, including use of ice axe and crampons.

Other skills will include, knots and rope work, navigation, risk management and planning and environmental awareness. There may be a nights snow caving or camping.
