Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School
January School Holidays

Since 1967, SCOUTS New Zealand's Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School has provided the highest quality aviation training in the country for budding young pilots aged 16-19. 

In 2014, 68 students attended the popular two-week long training camp at Matamata. The Walsh has many past students with successful careers in aviation. In 2008 we were pleased to welcome Pilot Officer Mary Woolston of 3 Squadron RNZAF, a past Walsh student, to present our young pilots with their Wings.

The 2013 school was fortunate to have the de Havilland Mosquito visit the school on its ferry flight back to Auckland from the Masterton Air Show. Students and staff were very privileged to be able to get a close inspection of the aircraft during the afternoon. At the Wings Parade its pilot Keith Skilling presented Scout Wings to 41 students and then departed for home with a flying display of the aircraft. Our thanks to the Mosquito’s owner Mr Jerry Yagen of the United States.

Students must be New Zealand citizens and only have minimal previous flight experience (up to 2 hours).

Cost:  Fees for the 2015 school will be set during March. We anticipate that there will be an increase on the 2014 school fees of $1550 for first year Venturer and Ranger students or $445 for returning students.

Registrations for the January 2015 school will open late April / early May 2014.

Registration: Before beginning your online registration to attend the Walsh you will need to have:

  • A valid email address and a password, which you will need to remember to update your registration at a later date.
  • Your Personal Membership Number (i.e. be a registered member of SCOUTS New Zealand) - if you do not have a Personal Membership Number please ask your local Leader to get one. If you have forgotten what your Personal Membership Number is please call 0800 SCOUTS or email reception@scouts.org.nz with your full name, Group or Unit name, address and a contact phone number.
    A Personal Membership Number is not required for non-Scouting registrations.
  • Authorisation to attend. If you are under 18 years of age you must complete your online registration with a parent or caregiver and provide their contact details so the Event Organisers may verify their approval for you to attend.
  • The names and contact details of your next of kin (you will need to enter at least one next of kin, but preferably enter two);
  • Medical and dietary information.
  • Your deposit - a deposit of $120  is required within 14 days of submitting the registration. Payment instructions are included in the checkout stage.

     

Note: Applications from students outside the age range of 16 - 19 years of age and overseas students will not be accepted.
