In March 2012, Stuart Fleming’s term as SCOUTS New Zealand’s first National Commissioner comes to an end and the search is on to find his replacement.

The National Commissioner is a member of both the National Council and National Executive. The position reports to the National Chairman and works closely with the Chief Executive and members of the national team.

Wilderness joins SCOUTS New Zealand

This month Wilderness magazine became an official sponsor of SCOUTS New Zealand and will actively promote the organisation and its activities.

SCOUTS New Zealand has recently undergone a resurgence in interest and there is now in excess of 20,000 young men and women involved with scouting activities. Worldwide there are over 30 million scouts in 150 countries.
The organisation has attracted high-profile outdoors people to its ranks, with ex-SAS soldier and now TV star Bear Grylls being the most prominent. In New Zealand, well known climber and outdoorsman Mark Inglis is SCOUTS Adventure Plus patron.
“A partnership with Wilderness is wonderful for SCOUTS New Zealand, it is the perfect fit,” said Chris Hooper CEO SCOUTS New Zealand. “A copy of Wilderness magazine should accompany any well prepared Scout on their travels, as it is packed full of information to enable young people to maximise their enjoyment of the fantastic environment around them.
“Wilderness, like SCOUTS, has a great history and I look forward to this partnership developing over the coming years.”
Wilderness magazine’s publisher David Hall said he is pleased to support SCOUTS because it shows kids there are wilder experiences to be had than playing computer games.
“Showing young people there is more to life than Playstation and a virtual game is a big attraction to us,” Hall said. “Scouting gets youngsters out into the backcountry, teaching them hard core actual skills that can help build confidence and a real ability to better handle life’s non-virtual challenges.”
Wilderness is part of a small group of partners that includes SPARC and The Ministry of Youth Development in addition to several other trusts and foundations.
